In the green heart of the Netherlands, nestled among the major cities, lies the small town of Oudewater. This town and its surrounding region boast a rich history dating back to the 11th century.
Renowned for its rope manufacturing, the Old Rope Factory stands as a relic of the industry’s industrialization in the 18th century.
The restoration of this historical gem began in 2017 and has since been completed, transforming the Steamhouse into a luxurious family home while preserving its historic charm.
While the exterior remains completely original, the interior has been modernized to meet contemporary living standards, yet still retains the historic details and elements of the original factory.
As you enter through the lush, walled garden, the sawtooth roof in the living room lets in natural light throughout the day, creating a dynamic atmosphere.
This space accommodates the owner’s atelier, a spacious open kitchen and dining area, and a well-stocked library. The walls serve as a canvas for displaying art. At night, the lighting transforms the living room into a blend of a gallery and a cozy, inviting space.
The central hallway connects the main living room to three bedrooms and two spacious bathrooms. A study with garden access offers a peaceful space for focused work. The back entrance leads to the property’s plot, featuring the original chimney and a large parking area.

Mark Theeuwes consulted on the interior design and the photos of the house were shot by Inga Powilleit. Not all spaces are represented on this website since we believe the house and its owners deserve some privacy;) If you need a closer look feel free to request the digital brochure or follow the Rope factory at Instagram for more regular updates and insights.
